INTREPID - SEA, AIR & SPACE MUSEUM - Adventures in Heroism The Concorde, the greatest advance in passenger aviation history and the envy of travelers around the globe, has finished its glorious career on a pedestal at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. The entire world was able to watch on television and later see in front page newspaper pictures as the renowned Concorde was towed up the Hudson River, under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and past the Statue of Liberty to its resting place --- the pier of the Intrepid Museum, where it will enter the final phase of its life. Its new mission --- take the public through aviation history. " Concorde is a great multi-national civilian achievement and we are proud to welcome her to the Intrepid," said Col. Tom Tyrrell, CEO of the museum, at the jetliner's arrival ceremony. "Generations to come will be able to experience supersonic travel and celebrate Concorde's legacy." After completing its final flight form London, Concorde was ferried to John F. Kennedy International Airport and on November 25, 2003, it was place on a 210 foot-long barge for the trip upriver. The barge was then attached to the museum complex for immediate public display and the aircraft's cockpit and cabin have since been opened to the public for tours. Special features will be added to the barge, including a museum pavilion with exhibits on supersonic flight and the history of the Concorde. The pavilion opened in the spring of 2004. |
