Launched July 16, 1969 at 9:32 A.M. EDT., The Apollo 11 Mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It was the fifth human spaceflight of Project Apollo and the third human voyage to the Moon or Moon orbit. It carried Mission Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Micheal Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene 'Buzz' Aldrin, Jr. On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon, while Collins orbited above. Mission Highlights: maximum distance from Earth 359,645km Lunar landing, July 20, at 04:17 P.M. EDT First step on moon, 10:56:15 P.M. ED "Thats one small step for man; One giant leap for mankind." - Neil Armstrong. Flag and instruments deployed; unveiled plaque on the LM descent stage with inscription: "Here Men From the Planet Earth First Set Foot Upon the Moon. July 1969 A.D. We Came In Peace For All Mankind." Lunar surface time 21.6 hours; 59.5 hours in lunar orbit, with 30 orbits. 20kg (44lbs) of material gathered. Landing: July 24, 1969. Splashdown at 12:50 P.M. EDT. Area: 13° 19 mins North and 169° 9 mins West. Crew on board USS Hornet at 01:53 P.M. EDT. Spacecraft aboard ship at 03:53 P.M. EDT.
