Apollo 11 Capsule - Signed By Astronaut Buzz Aldrin - 1/25The Apollo program was the United States spaceflight effort which landed the first humans on Earth's Moon. Conceived during the Eisenhower administration and conducted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Apollo began in earnest after President John F. Kennedy's 1961 address to Congress declaring his belief in a national goal of "landing a man on the Moon" by the end of the decade in a competition with the Soviet Union for supremacy in space. This goal was first accomplished during the Apollo 11 mission on July 20, 1969 when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed, while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit. Five subsequent Apollo missions also landed astronauts on the Moon, the last in December 1972. In these six Apollo spaceflights, 12 men walked on the Moon. These are the only times humans have landed on another celestial body. This Apollo capsule is personally signed by Buzz Aldrin. After graduating from Montclair High School in 1946, Aldrin went to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Aldrin graduated third in his class at West Point in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and served as a jet fighter pilot during the Korean War. Aldrin was selected as part of the third group of NASA astronauts in October 1963. On July 20, 1969, he was the second astronaut to walk on the moon and the first to have also spacewalked, keeping his record total EVA time until that was surpassed on Apollo 14.
He retired from active duty on March 1972. Since retiring he has continued to promote space exploration in a variety of interesting ways. The model was masterfully crafted in great detail inside and out. This signed capsule will have these other inclusions: specialized packaging : a Museum Quality Case, a Signature Plate, and a COA (Certificate of Authenticity).
